Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja Natural Park

Torrevieja

Description

Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja Natural Park is located in the region of Vega Baja del Segura, between the towns of Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and Rojales. It is a valuable wetland near the natural parks of El Hondo and Las Salinas de Santa Pola. This group of wetlands forms a natural environment of special significance for the biological cycle of many bird species, both resident and migratory.

Like other places with the same type of habitat, this environment is supported by the economic activity of a salt farm. This farm is located in the lake of Torrevieja, which has given rise to this wonderful landscape. In it, you can contemplate forest vegetation characteristic of the Mediterranean forest formed by kermes oak, lentisk and Aleppo pine which transforms as you approach the lake. Finally, this landscape is replaced by halophytic species, vegetation that naturally arises due to the salinity of the environment, such as the Kali turgidum, commonly known as the prickly saltwort or the Limonium caesium.

The large number of waterfowl and marsh birds are worth highlighting, which give rise to an atmosphere full of pleasant sounds and beauty. In addition, for those interested in bird watching, the park has a network of viewpoints and observatories available for use.
